What makes this a great opportunity?

  • Reporting directly into the General Manager, Scotland Operations, this is a key leadership role within Scotland, providing the platform to influence the long-term plans for the brands and the investment program for the distilleries and maturation sites.  
  • Leading the journey with the Suntory MBC team to reengineer the distilleries to achieve a spirit quality that is Gold standard.
  • As part of the Brand House structure, Scotch is an area of strategic growth. The Chief Blender will be pivotal in creating new liquid expressions that support the brand innovation pipelines both for the Scotch portfolio and international brands.
  • In addition to the operational aspects of the role, the role holder will interface with other Blenders and spirit experts across Beam Suntory and the Scotch Whisky industry ensure best practice is shared and adopted.  

 

Role Responsibilities

  • Ensures the Distilleries are producing new make spirit to the agreed standard through a diligent and meticulous spirit assessment process.  
  • Ensures spirit is matured to the correct quality standard through the cask management policy.
  • Working with 3rd party partners, establishes the relationships and agreements for reciprocal trading of spirit to ensure the right malts are available for the blended whisky recipes.
  • Develops a comprehensive roadmap for spirit laydown and stock profile for each brand that supports the Brand House’s ambitions, ensuring the stock profile is translated into volumes for the distilleries and cask storage volumes & profiles for the maturation facilities.
  • Manages and develops a stock system and processes that accurately reflect the availability of all expressions for the future based on the current maturing stock profile, and delives distillery production, spirit laydown, warehouse build and cask requirements
  • Leads the implementation of One Beam Suntory Way (OBSW) across Whisky stocks maximizing effectiveness, efficiency and delivering Year on Year improvements across spirit logistics, cask stocks and spirit losses.  
  • Maintain and evolve recipes for all whisky expressions, further developing the Whisky Stocks team in cask selection processes, short, medium and long-term allocation and planning.
  • Manages a cost center budget (circa £4.6m) of variable and fixed costs ensuring plans are actively managed to offset inflation annually.
  • Sets Whisky COGs for all expressions for 1-Year Budget, 3 Year Strategic Plan and 12-year Maturing Inventory Review. Forecasting monthly COGs variance to budget.
  • Engage with Master data to ensure all Bills of Material for whisky are correct for all operating units and are mapped between finance and stocks systems.
  • Ensures the Whisky Stocks team maintain the alignment between the Whisky Stocks System (DRAMS) and Finance Systems (SAP)
  • Develops strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders including the Brand House, Commercial Finance and the Suntory MBC team to ensure alignment on goals that drive towards gold standard liquid quality and liquid availability.
  • Supports the commercialization agenda for New Products, in conjunction with the Brand House, maintain a 5-year NPD pipeline for each brand.  Ensuring the whisky is available, is of the right age and quality to support the Brand innovation program.
  • Progress each new product from concept to launch, creating new whiskies with COGS, developing tasting notes and copy for each new expression.  Maintain strict project timelines through Project Management tool (Planisware) including approval of all artwork. Support any launch initiatives required by the Brand House.
  • Leads, motivates and develops the Whisky stocks teams in line with company values to maximised employee performance & engagement.
  • Builds strong people capability at all levels, together with detailed personal development plans (PDPs) and succession plans for the functional team.
  • Demonstrates a passion for diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the role and teams.
  • Act as an Ambassador for our Brands and for Beam Suntory in partnership with the Brand House

 

Qualifications & Experience

 Ideally educated to degree level in Chemical engineering / science or Brewing and Distilling

 

Level and type of experience:

  1. Chief Blender experience is essential, preferably overseeing the spirit quality of multiple premium brands. 
  2. Significant experience in Whisky stocks management and spirit trading.
  3. Experienced in ‘Operational & Distilling Excellence’ programs that drive best in class spirit quality is advantageous.
  4. Inclusive and collaborative style - able to multi-task, connecting people and adopting best-practices.
  5. Quality excellence mindset, driving high level of discipline and exceptional execution skills.

 

Industry experience:  Background in a Scotch Whisky, preferably working with premium Scotch whisky brands,
