  • This is a great opportunity for an experience leader to join the team to ead all aspects of the Malt & Grain Distillery Operations, Waste-Water Treatment Plant and Maturation Operations on the Cooley Site, ensuring key (SQPDCM) targets of environmental, health and safety, production, cost, quality, customer service, and people development are met.


Role Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a distillation and maturation strategy (in conjunction with Operations Director), including long term capital & capacity planning, which is aligned to the business strategy and focused on sustainable performance improvement.

  • Working with the General Manager, develop and implement a distillation and maturation strategy, including long term capital & capacity planning, which is aligned to the business strategy, focused on sustainable performance improvement and ensures all key business drivers are met. 

  • Responsible for ensuring that safe systems of work are in place in the distilleries and maintenance and that all employees have the Safe Operating Procedures and equipment necessary to carry out their duties safely, based on the findings of regular Risk Assessments.

  • Responsible for leading and motivating distillery and maturation operations teams to achieve maximum employee engagement and implementation of OBSW Lean Manufacturing principles across the TRACC methodology of EHS, Teamworking, Visual Management, Focussed Improvement, Asset Care and 5S.

  • Responsible for developing, leading and sustaining focussed improvement activities across distilling and maturation to generate a pipeline of Profit Improvement Projects from regular Loss & Waste analyses, and to eliminate systemic process problems.

  • Responsible for developing and driving process improvements to provide maximum possible levels of productivity.

  • Responsible for all appraisals for direct reports through the Company’s Performance, Development & Review process, ensuring skills and competencies are in place to meet the requirements of their roles, and where gaps are identified ensuring that training and development needs are managed accordingly in line with budget requirements.

  • Responsible for ensuring that the site facilities & distilling budgets are operated effectively with maximum return on spend being achieved, and that areas for best return are identified for Capital Expenditure, in conjunction with the Engineering department. 

  • Responsible for ensuring that systems are in place to maintain and improve the quality of production of new make spirit, as well as the storage of our stock, and that of 3rd parties, so that they best meet the needs of our customers (both internal and external).

  • Responsible for developing a working culture that ensures maximum flexibility in work practices and gives the highest possible levels of labour utilisation and efficiency, working within the framework of Beam Suntory values.

  • Responsible for managing any employee relations issues and performance management cases, working in conjunction with HR.

  • Work with Engineering to ensure effective maintenance of site and equipment, and to develop plans for capital projects spend and improvements.

  • Develop relationships with key suppliers (e.g. malt, maize, yeast, enzymes, logistics etc.) to ensure return on investments and maximum levels of service.

  • Identify and implement process controls and manufacturing standard operating procedures in distilling, maturation and bottling to ensure conformance of product to meet or exceed required performance in EHS, yields, quality and cost.

  • Responsible for working with the finance department on setting relevant operational and capital budgets. Review and monitor on an on-going basis to ensure budgets are delivered.

  • Complete all requirements for vendor management and for month end financial reporting to the required timelines.

  • Carry out problem solving to identify root causes and implement engineering corrective actions in process plant and throughout the facility in general.

  • With site managers, establish and implement process plant hygiene standards.

  • Work with Engineering to ensure effective maintenance of site and equipment, and to develop plans for capital projects spend and improvements.



Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified to degree level in an appropriate engineering discipline (Mechanical, Chemical or Process Control Engineering).
  • desireable to have a brewing/distilling degree/diploma 
  • Strong technical experience within a Brewing/Distilling environment.
  • Five years management experience in manufacturing is required.
  • To carry out this role successfully, a minimum of five years practical experience working in a managerial role within a mechanical/chemical process environment or related process industry.
  • Significant experience in delivering multi-disciplined mechanical / chemical engineering projects and general facilities management.
  • Use of Six Sigma Lean Manufacturing tools to drive a systematic, data driven approach to problem solving, including the use of DMAIC, 8D, 5WHY, FISHBONE ANALYSIS, STATICAL ANALYSIS AND MINITAB would be an advantage
  • Training in NAV and TRACC would be beneficial though not essential
