Assistant Distillery Manager - Laphroaig  

 

Purpose and Scope of Role

 

· To manage all aspects of Distillery Operations on the Laphroaig site, ensuring key (SQPDCM) targets of health and safety, production, cost, quality, customer service, and people development are met.

· To promote and drive the development of a Lean Manufacturing Continuous Improvement culture (One Beam Suntory Way) by involving, coaching and developing all employees at Laphroaig Distillery

· To lead the OBSW Implementation Task Force at Laphroaig – implementing and sustaining OBSW best practices.

· To contribute to the development of Laphroaig site objectives to meet the Company’s objectives.

· To review, maintain and develop the site Integrated Management Systems (e.g. safe operating procedures, work methods, risk assessments, COSHH registers and integrated project plans, etc.) to ensure conformance to ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018 and FEMAS standards.

· To ensure compliance with, and drive improvements in the management of, all health, safety & environmental legislation and requirements of HM Revenue & Customs.

· Provide support to the Laphroaig Distillery Manager and deputise where required.

· Provide support to the Bowmore Management team and deputise where required.

Role Responsibilities

· Responsible for Health and Safety at all levels on the Laphroaig site. This includes ensuring that safe systems of work are in place at all levels and that all employees have the Safe Operating Procedures and equipment necessary to carry out their duties safely, based on the findings of regular Risk Assessments.

· Responsible for leading and motivating operational teams to achieve maximum employee engagement and implementation of OBSW Lean Manufacturing principles across the

TRACC methodology of EHS, Teamworking, Visual Management, Focussed Improvement, 5S, Asset Care and Environment.

· Responsible for developing, leading and sustaining focussed improvement activities across the site to generate a pipeline of Profit Improvement Projects from regular Loss & Waste analyses, and to eliminate systemic process problems.

· Responsible for achieving optimum efficiencies to provide maximum possible levels of productivity at lowest cost. Involves continuously assessing the required equipment and methods to meet productivity targets, and wherever possible ensuring that these are sourced or made available.

· Support the appraisal system for direct reports through the Company’s Performance, Development & Review process, ensuring skills and competencies are in place to meet the requirements of their roles, and where gaps are identified ensuring that training and development needs are managed accordingly in line with budget requirements.

· Contribute to control of the site budget, ensuring it is operated effectively with maximum return on spend being achieved.

Role Responsibilities (Cont.)

· Responsible for ensuring that systems are in place to maintain the quality of production of new make spirit, as well as the storage of our stock, and that of 3rd parties, so that these best meet the needs of our customers (both internal and external).

· Responsible for working with a wide range of both internal and external customers to agree their service level needs and to ensure that these are consistently met.

· Support the development of a working culture that ensures maximum flexibility in work practices and gives the highest possible levels of labour utilisation and efficiency, working within the framework of Beam Suntory values.

· Responsible for ensuring that all operations run-in accordance with HM Revenue & Customs Notice 197.

· Work with Engineering to support Asset Care strategies to ensure effective maintenance of site and equipment, and to develop plans for capital projects spend and improvements.

· Develop relationships with key suppliers (e.g. barley/malt, yeast, logistics etc.) to ensure return on investments and maximum levels of service.

· Assist Brand Marketing in brand promotional activities both on- and off-site.

· Contribute to Islay Distilleries on-call rota.

Qualifications

 

· Qualified to degree level (desirable)

· Relevant Industrial Qualification (IBD)

· Five years general management experience in manufacturing or logistics is required

· Training in DRAMS, SAP and TRACC is desirable

 

Key Skills and Competencies

 

 

· Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all relevant Environmental, Health & Safety legislation, and HM Revenue & Customs.

· Comprehensive knowledge of all management and ISO Systems (ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 ISO 45001:2018 and FEMAS standards).

· Proven skills to lead, motivate coach and inspire Operating Teams.

· Broad knowledge of malting, mashing, fermentation and distillation operations.

· Good process knowledge of maturation operations.

· Proven knowledge and understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles (specifically TRACC methodology) and experience of Lean implementation within a production or maturation operation.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to build strong relationships cross-functionally.

· Ability to manage Employee and Industrial Relationships

· Auditing experience

· Proven knowledge of IT systems
