Launch a career in North American Whiskey blending.  Build in-depth technical knowledge and sensory expertise about the Beam Suntory portfolio of North American Whiskeys.  As apprentice, you will assist with the day-to-day mingling and taste profile management of the entire North American Whisky portfolio; ensuring the World's Largest Bourbon portfolio and #2 Global Canadian Whisky brand are consistently delivered to consumers around the globe. Primary focus areas include daily liquid management, mingling guidance based on deep understanding of inventory, managing through any potential issues and ensuring the quality of the portfolio is delivered each day. This position also provides broad exposure to Quality, Scientific Services, R&D, Marketing/Business team, Finance, Sourcing and other internal/external partners to ensure delivery of the daily business as well as sustainable aged-liquid innovation plans into the future.

Desired Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum M.S Food Science or related technical field preferred with 4+ years’ experience, or B.S. degree with 6+ years experience.
  • Minimum 4 years work experience in the distilled spirits industry, with preference to those with experience in barrel maturation of spirits. Experiences in product development, distillery operations, R&D, scientific services, QA/QC or sensory science significantly preferred.
  • A general understanding of the distilled spirits production process, from distillation through maturation, filtration and bottling; an understanding of sensory impacts for Bourbon and Canadian Whisky preferred.
  • Fluent in English
  • Strong ability to mentor & teach other co-workers, documenting knowledge for organization retention
  • Strong tasting palette with ability to recognize and describe off quality defects in matured spirits.
  • Successful completion of objective sensory acuity screening, including the identification of critical flavor defects in distilled spirits.
  • Ability to work independently in leading plan development and execution of short and long-term tasks.
  • Ability to develop strong cross functional relationships within Operations as well as with R&D, Marketing, Sourcing, Engineering, etc. to drive strong collaboration and results.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Strong working knowledge of lab operating procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including timely follow-up and commitment to deliverables, and openness to give and receive feedback.
  • Must be able to consume limited quantities of alcoholic beverage samples in accordance with evaluation/research needs.
  • Self-starter, flexible, comfortable working in unstructured face-paced environment, able to manage multiple priorities effortlessly.
  • Team player with collaborative style and strong listening and partnering skills.  Culturally sensitive, with ability to work in a global multicultural cross functional organization, requiring ability to work effectively across cultures, time zones to accommodate global responsibilities.
  • Ability to travel to partner in project work with internal and external clients, as well as support implementation at Beam facilities - travel approx. 10-15% mainly within Kentucky, Canada, and Chicago. With occasional international travel (eg Japan HQ and other BSI Distilleries).
  • Physically fit for work primarily in a lab, pilot plant and manufacturing environments, which includes long periods of standing, moving, and carrying or lifting up-to 50 pounds.
