The following open position is located in Calgary, Alberta - Plant Engineer.

This role is responsible for the constant review of maintenance processes to identify Reliability and Continuous Improvement opportunities that will result in improved safety, processes that operate robustly, improved quality, increased uptime, and cost savings through measurable KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). This position will require the use of advanced Six-Sigma tools (DMAIC), 5S, Value Stream Mapping, Process FMEA, TRACC, etc... as the foundation for each of the projects.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Works with Maintenance & Engineering to ensure the reliability and maintainability of new and modified installations.  Responsible for adhering to the life cycle cost process throughout the entire life cycle of new assets.
  • Participates in the development of design and installation specifications along with commissioning plans.
  • Participates in the development of criteria for and evaluation of equipment and technical MRO suppliers and technical maintenance service providers.
  • Develops acceptance tests and inspection criteria.
  • Participates in the final check out of new installations. This includes factory and site acceptance testing that will assure adherence to functional specifications.
  • Guides efforts to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, facilities, controls, and safety/security systems.
  • Professionally and systematically defines, designs, develops, monitors, and refines an Asset Care plan that includes:
  • Effective utilization of predictive and other non-destructive testing methodologies designed to identify and isolate inherent reliability problems
  • Improve preventative maintenance plans
  • Provide input to the Risk Management Plan that will reduce reliability-related adverse impacts to plant operation
  • Develop engineering solutions to repetitive failures and all other problems that adversely affect plant operations. These problems include safety, quality, capacity, cost, or regulatory compliance issues.
  • Work with Production to perform analyses of assets including asset utilization, overall equipment effectiveness, remaining useful life, other parameters that define operating condition, reliability and costs of assets
  • Provides technical support to production, maintenance management and engineering personnel.
  • As requested, provide the actions required to complete safety evaluations and implement safety tools, such as Engineering Project Safety Checklist, Equipment Safety Tag Programs, safety walk-throughs and inspections.
  • Optimize system performance through the reduction to practice of changes brought about by capital investment, the development and maintenance of product/system capacity studies, the enhancement of system reliability and the identification, analysis, and implementation of productivity strategies.
  • Coordinate with the maintenance department to support projects.  
  • Lead in the documenting and maintenance of project materials used, documentation of shop drawings, and delivery and storage of equipment and material specifications.
  • Assist in the documenting and closing of the projects to get asset information in SAP through imputing in SAP and other maintenance data systems.
  • Liaise with external suppliers to ensure equipment and consumables used are appropriate to the operations and are the most efficient solution.
  • Contribute to the 5s initiative to ensure that improvements are sustained and entrenched within the business.
  • Develop and drive a culture of continuous improvement within maintenance ensuring the engagement and involvement of the entire maintenance and engineering department.
  • Lead and support root cause analysis when plant and equipment issues arise. Implement corrective and preventative actions and ensure that these are appropriately documented and approved in accordance with local procedures.
  • Support the introduction of new equipment defining user requirements specifications through involvement in commissioning, validation, and ongoing operation & maintenance.
  • Conduct optimization studies and perform detailed engineering analysis of existing facilities, systems & process equipment.
  • Professionally and systematically defines, designs, develops, monitors, and refines an Asset Care plan that includes:
  • Value-added preventive maintenance tasks
  • Effective utilization of predictive and other non-destructive testing methodologies designed to identify and isolate inherent reliability problems
  • Improved preventative maintenance plans
  • Creating and documentation of job tasks for maintenance activities

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Minimum 5 to 7 years’ experience in reliability engineering, project engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in maintenance, project design, installation, and operation.
  • Previous experience working in the food processing or manufacturing preferred.
  • Demonstrated strength in problem solving skills.
  • Ability to read and produce flow diagrams and PID's.
  • Ability to work independently to develop maintenance work instructions, preventive maintenance plans, and required spare parts lists.
  • Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill required.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and walk up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to stay on work site for extended periods of time when required.
  • SAP, HACCP, and ISO or Continuous Improvement experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of SAP Maintenance software, PLC’s and AutoCAD preferred.
  • Working in a unionized environment preferred.

 

 

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical or similar Engineering preferred.
  • A four-year degree in engineering technology with appropriate experience may be considered.
